Clear Lake’s Future is Looking Brighter
October 1, 2026
For generations, Clear Lake has been the heart of Lake County, drawing visitors from across California to enjoy world-class fishing, boating, birdwatching, and lakeside recreation. An exciting science-based effort led by University of California, Davis’ Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) is helping protect and preserve this treasured resource for future generations.

As California’s largest natural freshwater lake located entirely within the state, Clear Lake spans more than 43,000 acres and offers endless opportunities for outdoor adventure. Its expansive waters, abundant wildlife, and renowned bass fishing have made it a favorite destination for anglers, boaters, paddlers, and nature lovers alike.

Researchers are developing a new Hypolimnetic Oxygenation System (HOS) designed to improve water quality by increasing oxygen levels in the lake’s deeper waters. This innovative approach addresses one of the key factors contributing to harmful algal blooms, helping create healthier conditions for the lake’s ecosystem.

The project is part of a larger rehabilitation effort focused on protecting the long-term health of Clear Lake while enhancing the recreational experiences that residents and visitors cherish. Years of research have shown that improving deep-water oxygen levels can help reduce the release of phosphorus from lake sediments, one of the primary drivers of algae growth.
The oxygenation system is expected to be operational by summer or fall 2027, representing an important milestone in ongoing efforts to improve water quality and support Clear Lake’s future.
For visitors, this work reflects Lake County’s commitment to stewardship of its most iconic natural asset. Whether you’re casting a line for trophy bass, paddling along a quiet shoreline, photographing abundant wildlife, or simply soaking in one of Clear Lake’s unforgettable sunsets, investments like these are helping ensure that Clear Lake remains a destination to enjoy for years to come.
