Three Great Places to Eat in Lake County

January 11, 2022

It doesn’t matter what part of Lake County you choose to visit; you’re sure to find good food. Even though we’re rural, we still have many restaurants that are sure to tantalize your tastebuds and fill you up. Whether you’re spending a day on Clear Lake and looking for a bite to eat or coming down from a hike of Mt. Konocti tired and hungry, there’s always a place to go. Here are three Lake County favorites, beloved by locals and tourists alike:

Middletown: Los Compas Taqueria

Los Compas isn’t your typical boring taco truck. Owners Edgar Bonilla and Antonio Sanchez are committed to creating high-quality, genre-bending food. Try some of their teriyaki hot wings, pick up a burger, or enjoy the soup of the day. On weekends, they also offer breakfasts, with entrees spanning from pancakes to eggs benedict. Oh, they also have high-quality tacos and burritos too. Whether you prefer Asada, Al Pastor, or Carnitas, each one is perfectly balanced and designed to go with their homemade salsas.

Location: 21208 Calistoga St, Middletown, CA 95461. (707) 974-7121. Open seven days a week, 11 am – 7 pm. Cash only.

Lakeport: Red’s at the Skyroom

It isn’t often that you can sit on an airport runway, sipping on a handcrafted cocktail, watching the planes come and go. Red’s at the Skyroom offers just that; a place to kick back, eat some good food and hang out with the pilots, who fly in from across Northern California to enjoy quality eats. If you’re looking for California-style comfort food in Lake County, you’ve found the place. Whether you’re munching on their Chimmichuri Rubbed Chicken Wings, slicing through their Atomic Wedge Salad, or enjoying the Wild Mushroom Meatloaf, you can be sure every ingredient’s fresh, well-prepared, and often locally sourced.

Location: Lampson Field- 900 Sky Park Dr, Lakeport, CA 95453. (707) 349-9812 Hours: 11 am – 9 pm Monday through Saturday, 10 am – 9 pm Sunday.

Clearlake: Boar’s Breath Barbecue

A hidden treasure, Boar’s Breath Barbecue’s most recognizable features are the stacks of wood out front and the smell of woodsmoke wafting across Lakeshore Drive. For more than twenty years, Boar’s Breath has created tasty barbecue the right way, slow cooking their meat over long periods of time. Using their gator pit smoker, they spread their cuts over coals of white oak, creating a magical mélange of smokiness and spice. But that’s just the meat; every entrée has been well-planned and balanced to draw out the ideal flavors—like the Butt Sandwich, a combination of pulled pork, handmade Carolina sauce, and homemade slaw perfectly portioned on a potato bun.

Location: 14667 Lakeshore Dr, Clearlake, CA 95422. (707) 995-2000. Hours: 11 am – 4 pm Wednesday through Monday.
