Get Your Fill of Mouthwatering Treats at Castle Donuts
January 22, 2021
The case, filled with donuts, pastries, and treats, shines in the morning sun. Light glints off the glaze on an old-fashioned donut and shimmers on the maple bars. A woman pushes the door open, walks in with her daughter, and stands in front of the case.
“I just had to get out of the house,” she says, a look of desperation in her eyes. “Every day, I just wake up, eat, and go to sleep.” She pauses. “Then I wake up, eat, and go to sleep again the next day. I’m going crazy! I had to do something.”
She gazes through the glass at the pastries sitting in the case, her mind temporarily distracted by the temptation of sugary goodness, then picks out a few and hands her card under the newly installed plexiglass window to the gloved cashier. Then she and her daughter head out the door with donuts in hand and smiles on their faces.
If you live in Lake County and haven’t been to Castle Donuts yet, you’re seriously missing out. This shop creates donuts that fill people’s fantasies. It doesn’t matter which type you choose; you can’t go wrong. From bacon maple bars to custard-filled, chocolate-covered donuts, from old-fashioned to glazed, from apple fritters to bear claws, Castle Donuts makes them all spectacularly.
“It’s all the same recipe that every donut shop uses,” Lee Cheng, owner of Castle Donuts, says. “The secret is how you make them.” Whatever secret he’s using, it works and has been working for a long time. When Lee and his family took over in 1999, they continued a long tradition of great-tasting, spectacular pastries. Every donut is filled with flavor and is neither dry and pasty nor gooey and underbaked. They are fluffy, light, and dissolve in the mouth, making the small shop in Clearlake a favorite of many locals and a place where it’s easy to get a vicious sugar fix satisfied.
Right now, the shop is open and taking precautions to ensure safety and cleanliness while still creating fantastic sweets. They wear gloves, clean between each customer, and ensure that the customers keep a six-foot distance.
So, if you’re craving some good-tasting donuts, Castle Donuts is the place. Please stay safe and take proper precautions recommended by our county’s health officer. Then, of course, enjoy.
Castle Donuts is located at 14370 Lakeshore Drive in Clearlake and is open from 5 am to 5 pm Monday through Saturday and from 6 am to 4 pm on Sunday. You can call them at (707)-995-0133.
