Did you know Lake County was once home to the largest known Valley Oak tree in California?
This fabulous historical video short by Joseph BoomBotz spotlights “El Roble Grande,” a gigantic oak toppled by a winter storm in 1952 outside Lower Lake, California, that was estimated to be between 500 and 800 years old. A massive section of that tree trunk is now on display to visitors at the Lower Lake Schoolhouse Museum, complete with wood ring markers showing the years and events that spanned the history of its life. A very cool piece of Lake County history!

Stargazer alert! A rare green comet is making its closest approach to Earth this week, even visible to the naked eye for some viewers. Known as C/2022 E3 (ZTF), the comet is passing by for the first time since the Stone Age! Those curious to see it should grab the chance, because it won’t return in our lifetime — or perhaps ever, Bay Area astronomers say.
The comet will make its brightest and closest approach to Earth this Wednesday, Feb. 1. Experts say it will be visible for several days before and after that date.
From a very dark sky location (like we enjoy in Lake County) it may be visible to the naked eye, but for most locations observers will need binoculars or a small telescope.
To spot the comet, look in the northeastern sky after 9 p.m. It will get progressively higher each day and will be almost directly above the North Star at around 10 p.m. Tuesday.
Stargazers tip: look straight at the North star and tip your head up a little bit, about twice the width of your outstretched fist.

Looking for a family friendly activity this weekend? Check out the natural history exhibit at Clear Lake State Park visitor center!
Open Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM, this educational exhibit features local wildlife, information about Clear Lake (don’t miss the aquarium in the back), and a look at the life of the indigenous Pomo people who were first inhabitants of Lake County.
When you’re finished at the visitor center, be sure to go for a hike along one of the many trails in the park. It’s a fun way to spend Saturday afternoon!
